Roof Moisture Mapping Calculator

Trapped moisture is one of the most expensive problems in commercial roofing. Water that infiltrates insulation layers beneath the membrane causes R-value degradation, structural deterioration, and mold growth—often invisible from the surface until damage is severe. Infrared moisture mapping, performed per ASTM C1153 standards, uses thermal imaging to detect temperature differentials that indicate subsurface moisture—enabling targeted repairs instead of full roof replacement.

How Drone Moisture Mapping Works

During the day, the sun heats the entire roof surface. After sunset, dry insulation releases stored heat quickly, while moisture-laden areas retain heat longer due to water's higher thermal mass. This creates measurable temperature differentials that our 640x512 radiometric thermal camera detects from altitude.

1. Evening Flight

Conducted 2-4 hours after sunset when temperature differentials are optimal. Minimum 10 degrees F day/night delta required.

2. Thermal Capture

RTK GPS-tagged thermal images at 3cm ground sample distance. Every pixel carries calibrated temperature data.

3. Analysis and Report

Georeferenced thermal maps with moisture probability assessments (High/Moderate/Low) and GPS-tagged defect locations.

Why Moisture Mapping Saves Money

Traditional roof inspections rely on visual assessment and random core sampling—often missing moisture that has migrated through insulation layers. Infrared moisture mapping reveals the full extent of water intrusion, enabling facility managers to:

  • Target repairs precisely: Replace only moisture-affected sections instead of the entire roof system
  • Document for insurance: ASTM C1153 compliant reports provide defensible evidence for insurance claims
  • Catch problems early: Annual thermal surveys detect moisture intrusion before it causes structural damage
  • Plan budgets accurately: Quantified affected area data enables precise repair cost estimates
